Passaic Valley girls track coach Bill Johnson is putting together some track records, covering the program’s history and is asking for help from the community.
REMEMBER WHEN – Former Passaic Valley track standout and Hall of Fame member Jesse Mizzone won four-consecutive conference titles in both the 1600 and 3200 meters and was a three-time Passaic County champion in the same events from 2000-03.
“I’ve got some good stuff already, but I’d like to make sure our records are complete,” said Johnson. “I could use some help from those who may have followed the program, or could have competed on the girls track team before I took over.”
What Johnson so far has compiled the following records. The team relay champions include the 1981 distance medley team and the ’81 4-x-1600 team; the 1991 shuttle hurdles; the ’93 and ’95 high jump relay teams; the 2001 4-x-1600 distance medley team; the 2002 4-x-800 and 4-x-1600 distance medley teams; the 2003 distance medley team; the 2010 long jump relay; the 2011 and 2015 javelin teams and the 2012 shuttle hurdles relay.
Among the individual Passaic County champions are Cheryl Antonio, javelin, 1990; Michelle Dudzinski, high hurdles, 1992 and high jump, 1993; Amy Mizzone, 800 meters, 1995 ;Ursula Kim, 800 meters, 1996; Desire Alexander, high jump, 1999; Ali DiDomenico, 200 and 400 meters, 2004 and Victoria Kriv, 200 meters, 2012.
The Passaic Valley state sectional champions are Desire Alexander in the high jump, 1998; Hall of Famer Jesse Mizzone, 3200 meters, 2000, 2002 and 2003; DiDomenico, 200 and 400 meters, 2002 and the 2004 champion in the 200 meters and Melissa Pasqual, high jump, 2011.
There is an impressive list of Passaic Valley conference champions, beginning with Aisha Alexander in the 1600 and 3200 meters in 1998 and Desire Alexander in the shot put, 1998. Desire Alexander won the shot put and high jump championship in 1999 and repeated in those events in 2000.
In 2000, Jesse Mizzone began a marvelous run by winning the conference 1600 and 3200 meter championships, for four-consecutive years. Mizzone also won the Passaic County 3200 meters three times and won the 1600 meters Passaic County title once.
In 2003 and 2004, DiDomenico won the 100 and 200 meter championships and in ’04, added the long jump crown for a trifecta.
The 100 meter high hurdles was won by Rebecca Leonardo in 2007, Pasqual in 2010 and 2011, Jessica Addonizio in 2012 and 2013, Julie Goldberg in 2014 and Cat Cole in 2015. Goldberg had quite the run in 2014, winning the triple jump and intermediate hurdle titles, as well.
Garbrielle Crocco won the long jump in 2011, Kriv added conference titles in the 200 and 400 meters in 2012 and then repeated in the 200 and 400 meters a year later, while also adding the 400 meter title in 2013.
“Vicky Kriv finished second in the sectionals in the 200 meters to Keturah Orji of Mount Olive,” recalled Johnson. “And Orji is now on the United States Olympic team for the triple jump. Not bad, huh?”
There were certainly some tremendous athletes who competed in girls track and hopefully Johnson will be able to obtain some other records to add to a prestigious list.
If you know of other records that should be included, Johnson would like you to e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org
The fall sports teams will all be practicing within the next few days. That means plenty of coverage coming up for the football, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, cross country, gymnastics, girls’ volleyball and girls’ tennis teams this fall.
It should be an exciting time as the school has a new athletic director in Rob Carcich.
